The Brockton Public Schools proposes to have 20 AmeriCorps members who will serve as early literacy tutors in five under-performing elementary schools. At the end of the program year, the 20 AmeriCorps members will be responsible for: 1) Engaging 400 economically disadvantaged grade K to 3 students (20 students per member) with exceptional needs (reading 1 to 1.5 years below grade level) in research-based Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI)-model tutoring. Intensive, small group tutoring (4 students per group) in daily 40-minute instructional blocks, five days a week. LLI is a nationally acclaimed model of early literacy intervention, currently used in over 6,000 public and private schools and districts across the U.S. 2) Improved academic performance in literacy of these targeted students, specifically an anticipated outcome that they will advance at least four reading levels per LLI Benchmark Assessments over the school-year-long (36-week) program.
